Cape Reinga
Spread the love

This was our first trip to the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand. Of course, we had to visit Cape Reinga Lighthouse – the place where the seas meet. This is the northernmost point of New Zealand where you can reach by car.
In this place, the Tasman Sea (Te Moana-a-Rehua) meets the Pacific Ocean (Te Tai-o-Whitirea)and when you stand on the lighthouse viewpoint, you feel like you are at the edge of the earth.
This is one of the least densely populated places in New Zealand surrounded by wildlife. We took the opportunity to make a short walk of several kilometres from Cape Reinga lighthouse to Tapotupotu Beach along a small part of the Te Paki Coastal Track 58km long.
This track stretches from Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) on the north-eastern part of the cape to Te Paki Stream with famous Te Paki Gaint Sand Dunes at the south-western part of Cape, where we later also visited and from where we made a small trip along the 90-mile beach. You can also see photos of this part of the trip in my blog –  Giant Sand Dunes & Ninety Miles Beach.
